Folks may be wondering what there is to do in Kentucky. Well keep reading, because this list goes on and on! As you drive along the back roads, you will not be disappointed by the awe-inspiring natural beauty, from rolling hills to lush valleys. Kentucky is best known for such things as the Kentucky Derby, bourbon distilleries, stunning farmland, glistening lakes and much more. Oh, did i mention the friendly people? Kentucky truly is a prime location for outdoor enthusiasts and those looking to have a good time.

If you have an interest in horse racing, be sure to visit Churchill Downs in Louisville or explore Keenland in Lexington. Churchill Downs is famous for hosting the Kentucky Derby. Both Keenland and Churchill Downs hold Spring and Fall meets. Horse racing is incredibly thrilling, even if you only make small bets on each race. When selecting the horse you believe will win, you can get creative! While some people approach it scientifically, I often choose based on the horse's whimsical name. Surprisingly, this method has proven successful at times! For specific race dates and dress codes, please refer to the respective websites of these venues. Tickets can also be conveniently purchased online. Due to high demand, tickets tend to sell out quickly, so it's advisable to plan well in advance, even months ahead! FYI: I love the bread pudding at Keenland!
Many people in Kentucky enjoy hiking, biking, and boating. There are numerous locations where you can engage in your preferred outdoor activities or even venture out and try something new. Some top hiking spots in Kentucky are Red River Gorge in Slade, Raven Run in Lexington, and the Pinnacles in Berea. For boating enthusiasts, Lake Cumberland, Dale Hollow Lake, Laurel River Lake, and Nolin Lake are highly recommended by locals. You can't go wrong with any of these lakes. The University of Kentucky Arboretum is also one of my favorite spots to walk, even if walking alone. It offers long paved trails for walking or running, an area with beautiful flowers and butterflies in the summer months, as well as benches for resting. Families with young children can explore the Children's Garden (remember to bring the kids extra clothes/shoes and sunblock).

Among the top attractions in Kentucky are Cumberland Falls State Park, Mammoth Cave National Park, Natural Bridge State Resort Park, and Kentucky Horse Park. A full day can be easily spent exploring any of these parks. Cumberland Falls, situated in Corbin, Kentucky, is a 125-foot waterfall where visitors can witness the enchanting "moonbow" phenomenon during a full moon. The park features hiking trails and picnic areas. Mammoth Cave boasts the world's longest known cave system and offers activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, and camping. Natural Bridge, located near Red River Gorge in Slade, Kentucky, showcases a 78-foot long and 65-foot high natural sandstone arch. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable shoes for walking. It is a long, difficult climb up the stairs to see natural bridge. I would not advise on taking small children on this hike. I also noticed a sign that said no pets allowed on the trail, but I did see some anyway. Picnicking and bird watching are popular pastimes there as well. Kentucky Horse Park is a stunning destination with numerous family-friendly activities year-round. For the latest updates on activities, including dates and times, visit their website. They do offer many family friendly activities on the weekends.

Great places for kids to enjoy include Bernheim Forest, Kentucky Down Under, Louisville Zoo, and Newport Aquarium. Bernheim Forest, spanning 16,000 acres in Clermont, Kentucky, offers numerous hiking trails and picnic spots. Don't miss the three Forest Giants - the kids will be thrilled! Kentucky Down Under, situated in Horse Cave, Kentucky, allows families to interact with friendly kangaroos. Make sure to buy tickets online in advance and consider renting a golf cart for a more enjoyable visit. Louisville Zoo and Newport Aquarium are always popular choices. Remember you must purchase Newport Aquarium tickets online. For outdoor activities with young children, bring a wagon, sunscreen, and snacks/drinks.
